A quiet change in school: dignity and health for adolescent girls

Health & Hygiene

With CSR support from KONE India, we installed sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators in 14 government schools in Hyderabad, provided 98,000 sanitary pads, and held menstrual hygiene sessions reaching 3,797 adolescent girls.

For many adolescent girls in government schools, managing their period at school is a real challenge. Sanitary pads are not always within reach, there is often no safe way to dispose of used pads, and menstruation is still a subject few people talk about openly. Too often, this means discomfort, missed classes and silence.

What we did

With CSR support from KONE India, Sahara Jan Kalyan Samiti brought practical, lasting solutions to government schools in Hyderabad, Telangana. In each school, we installed a sanitary napkin vending machine so girls can get a pad at school when they need it, and a sanitary napkin incinerator for safe and hygienic disposal. Each school also received 7,000 sanitary pads, and our team held orientation sessions on menstrual hygiene and health for the girls.

The programme reached 14 government schools and 3,797 adolescent girls, with 98,000 sanitary pads provided. Installation was completed between 26 July and 1 August 2024, and orientation sessions were held in every school by 3 August 2024.

What changed

Girls no longer have to worry about being caught without a pad at school, or about where to dispose of one. The orientation sessions helped them understand menstrual health and hygiene, and take care of themselves with confidence. The schools have confirmed in writing that the machines are installed and in operation.

A small machine on a school wall has made a real difference: girls can stay in class, feel more confident, and treat menstruation as a normal part of life, not a reason to stay at home.

Our gratitude

We thank KONE India for its commitment to girls' health and dignity, and the headmasters, teachers and staff of our 14 partner schools for welcoming this programme.
